How to Choose Curtain Rods

Curtain rods are the unsung heroes of window treatments. Wrong rods sag, stick, or look cheap despite expensive curtains. Right rods disappear into the background or become decorative features themselves.

Rod Types

Standard single: One rod, one layer of curtains. Most common, most straightforward.

Double rods: Front and back rod for layering (sheers + drapes). Essential for light control flexibility.

Tension rods: Spring-loaded, no drilling. Great for rentals, lightweight curtains only.

Wrap-around: Returns around window sides, blocks light gaps. Best for blackout applications.

Ceiling mount: Attaches to ceiling, dramatic floor-to-ceiling curtains. Modern, maximizes height.

Traverse: Cord-operated, curtains slide on carriers. Formal, often for heavy drapes.

### Diameter Guidelines

Light curtains (sheers, linen): 3/4" or 1" diameter
Medium curtains (cotton, poly blend): 1" diameter
Heavy curtains (velvet, blackout): 1-1/4" to 1-3/8" diameter

Heavier curtains need thicker rods to prevent sagging.

### Extension and Projection

Extension: How far the rod adjusts. Buy rod that reaches your width WITHOUT maximum extension (prevents sag).

Projection: How far bracket holds rod from wall. Need 3-4" for curtains to clear window trim, 4-6" for layered curtains.

### Mounting

Wall mount: Standard, brackets screw into wall beside window
Inside mount: For inside window frame (typically tension rods)
Ceiling mount: Brackets attach to ceiling

Find studs when possible. Use drywall anchors rated for rod + curtain weight if no studs.

### Finials

End caps that complete the rod look. Options:

Ball: Classic, somewhat dated
- Capped: Simple, modern, minimal
- Decorative: Scrolls, crystals, leaves (traditional)
- None: Straight cut end, contemporary
